Progress?
We talk a lot about progress on this website. Our parent company, Sunny Day Online, has a motto that is Always Mooving Forward. MeetMerced.com is always trying to find ways to be on the leading edge of the grassroots movement to make Merced a better place to live, work, and play. This is all good, but Merced seems to be stuck in rut.
Atwater Baseball Again?
That's right, we could be looking at the return of Baseball to Firemen's Memorial Field in Atwater. I remember attending games of the minor league team that was there back in the mid '90s. What fun it was and it was not even that far away. The big water tower in the background just made the entire experience so surreal.
Today is History
Today is history for Merced County and its residents. Merced County annexed more than 4000 acres of land from Fresno County in the Dos Palos area. The annexation brings with it 400 residents and 6.5 square miles of prime ag land.
This addition is good for Merced and its history because Merced County hasn't grown geographically since 1887. That is 121 years for those that want the math done for them.
I want to congratulate the people involved in this land deal and welcome our new Merced County residents to Merced.
Thanks,
Shady
Merced County Number One, and its not a good thing!
In rankings released November 29th, 2007 by the US Council of Mayors, Merced was ranked number one for foreclosures. Ouch! We need to be number one, but not for that reason. I thought that the UC was supposed to be the answer for the economic disparity found in this town. What's going on...
Pinecone Mongolian Grill - Our First Official Restaurant Review
In this crazy online world, part of establishing your site is attracting visitors. Here at MeetMerced.com we are no different. We can't have a site with no visitors. So today, we introduce a major feature of the site, the restaurant review, in the hopes that we can attract more visitors. We, like everyone else, have to pay our bills. We can't do that without selling advertisements that help maintain this free service to the community of Merced.
The Power of the Gift
If you look up the definition of Gift on the internet you get something along the lines of:
"A gift or present is the transfer of something, without the need for compensation that is involved in trade. A gift is a voluntary act which does not require anything in return. Even though it involves possibly a social expectation of reciprocity, or a return in the form of prestige or power, a gift is meant to be free." -from Wikipedia
But what really is a gift and what power does it hold?

Disneyland is how far?
Trip MapThis past weekend I was fortunate enough to be able to head down to beautiful Anaheim, CA to walk among the masses in the park that Walt build. Yah, it was a 4 and 1/2 hour drive through mostly farm land and some traffic, it was all worth the 15 hours we spent in Disneyland. We left at 2:30 a.m. Saturday and arrived at 7:00 a.m. at the Disneyland Parking Structure. A quick ride on the tram and we were in line for Disneyland at 7:15 a.m. Disneyland didn't open until 8:00 a.m.
Jericho Saved
Thought I would add an update to the Jericho Saga that began a few months ago. Jericho is back and bigger than ever. We are currently planning a huge Convention in Oakley, KS, the town that the fictional Jericho, KS is based upon, for the weekend of September 14, 15, and 16.
Go to http://www.guardiansofjericho.org for more information. Congratulations to all the Rangers out there.
Save Jericho
I know that I am not supposed to use this board to sound off about personal stuff but today is the exception. Hopefully, I am not censored.
Jericho Opening: The title sequence of Jericho. How many of you have heard the recent news about the cancellation of Jericho, the docudrama from CBS about the nuclear attacks? That's right folks, the suits at CBS have decided that Jericho made them look too conservative or liberal or whatever. I really don't know what the reasons behind the cancellation was, but I do know that it is not because Jericho doesn't have fans. More on this later.
